The problem athletes run into in many training programs and HS weight rooms is that they don’t have progressions for major lifts such as the squat and deadlift to safely progress a beginner.
We have progressions for just about everything and we are strict on who can use a barbell. We have to see strength levels exceeding whats required to squat a barbell on the athletes back before they even attempt it. We know that this will keep the athlete safe and also it will provide a seamless transition to heavy barbell squatting.
Having progressions and standards also keeps the athletes progressing… they aren’t getting stuck on something and seeing no gains because they aren’t ready for what you’re asking them to do.
