A lot of people complain of lower back issues. Some do have a medical issue but many truly have weak lower backs so when they actually use it they think there is something wrong… The lower back is an area that needs direct training with high volumes.. Meaning often and a lot of reps. Blood just doesn’t flow there like it does through your thigh muscles and thus it needs lots of volume. Many coaches are afraid to train the lower back and avoid it like the plague. In my opinion, this is a huge mistake.
As an athlete if you want to build maximal strength than deadlifting and squatting are crucial and if you are deadlifting and squatting with out building up a strong lower back 1st with direct low back work you are setting yourself up for a disaster. The lower back many times is the weakest link on a person and the 1st thing to give out under any type of substantial resistance.
When I started adding huge amounts of low back training to our programs with the 45 degree back extension and the reverse hyper we rarely see hamstring and lower back injuries and we get much fewer back complaints… and we deadlift very often in here. When I say huge amounts Im talking about working up to a few hundred reps per week on back extensions and a few hundred per week on reverse hypers.. I did a whole video on reverse hypers here: https://youtu.be/x3P-qrwiimE
